Plant, names and product
What is macambo? Pataxte and jaguar cacao explained.
Macambo refers to the plant species Theobroma bicolor and its seeds, which are eaten as food. Pataxte and jaguar cacao are other common names. The plant is related to ordinary cacao but is a distinct species.
One plant, several names
When you search for macambo, you will find different regional and trade names. Our packaging also says “white cacao”. The botanical name Theobroma bicolor is the clearest guide: it helps you compare products regardless of their headline.
The same name on two product pages does not necessarily mean the same preparation. Whole beans, ground products and ready-made mixes can differ in their ingredients and uses. Check the actual product description.
| Name | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Macambo / pataxte / jaguar cacao | Names for Theobroma bicolor | Product form, processing and ingredients |
| Ordinary cacao | Theobroma cacao | For example, beans, nibs or powder |
| White cacao / cacao blanco | A trade name that refers to macambo in our shop | Check the botanical name |
How is macambo different from ordinary cacao?
The botanical distinction matters because Macambo Natural is a food in its own right. It is not cocoa powder or a chocolate mix. This product offers pale beans as a ready-to-eat snack.
Our macambo has a mild flavour with nutty, buttery notes. If you expect a strong dark-chocolate taste, bear this description in mind. Being related to cacao does not mean the two products will taste or behave the same in a recipe.
What does “Natural” mean at Jungle-Harvest?
The ingredient list has just one item: 100% macambo. The natural beans are ready to eat. You do not need to grind our packaged product or turn it into a drink before trying it.
What should you check when buying macambo?
- Identity: Does the product state Theobroma bicolor?
- Ingredients and form: Is it whole beans, powder or a mix?
- Origin: Is the growing location clearly stated?
- Comparing prices: Compare the price per kilogram and delivery charges.
- How you will use it: Does the product suit snacking, a topping or your recipe?
At Jungle-Harvest, you will find Macambo Natural from Santa Rita in Napo, Ecuador. The 200 g, 500 g, 1 kg and 10 kg packs differ only in quantity; the ingredients and origin are the same.
